About The Cast Frontier

Louis Perea Owner and Guide

Louis is a decorated, retired U.S. Air Force veteran who completed his career as a flight engineer in Combat Search and Rescue. During his service, he also conducted rescue missions across the vast and rugged terrain of Alaska. Now, he’s trading helicopters for rafts—guiding others down the pristine streams along the Parks Highway.

His journey as an angler began humbly in the mountains of northern New Mexico. It wasn’t until he returned to those same mountains years later that his passion for fishing was reignited—quickly becoming a driving force in his life. In 2013, Louis moved to Alaska to finish out his military career with the Alaska Air National Guard. It was here that his love for fishing truly flourished.

Over the past 12 years, Louis has inspired and mentored countless anglers with his natural teaching ability and deep knowledge of the water. Now rooted in the Susitna Valley, he’s committed to sharing unforgettable fishing experiences while supporting conservation efforts for Alaska’s iconic salmon and rainbow trout.

What to Expect on a Trip with The Cast Frontier

Your day begins with a warm welcome and trip briefing, where we’ll go over safety, the day’s plan, and river conditions. Once geared up, we launch the raft and begin your float down one of the Susitna Valley’s pristine rivers—targeting wild rainbow trout, Arctic grayling, and seasonal salmon depending on the time of year.

Throughout the day, you’ll receive hands-on instruction in fly fishing techniques, casting, and presentation. Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned angler, we tailor the trip to your skill level and goals. We’ll cover the best holding water, seasonal patterns, and give you the tools to hook into fish with confidence.

Gear Provided

  • Premium fly rods, reels, and lines
  • Flies, leaders, and tippet
  • Waders and boots (if requested in advance)
  • PFDs and safety gear
  • Comfortable, fully equipped raft with seating and dry storage
  • Soft Drinks, drinking water, and light snacks (advise of food allergies prior to trip)

What to Bring on Your Trip

To ensure a comfortable and safe experience on the water, we recommend bringing the following:

Personal Essentials

  • Polarized Sunglasses (a must for spotting fish and protecting your eyes)
  • Prescription Eyewear/Contacts (with backups if needed)
  • Any Required Medications (including EpiPens, inhalers, or allergy meds)
  • Sunscreen (even on cloudy days—Alaskan UV can be intense)
  • Bug Spray or Repellent Wipes
  • Reusable Water Bottle (optional—hydration provided)

Clothing & Comfort

  • Weather-Appropriate Layers (Alaska weather can change fast)
  • Rain Jacket or Shell (even if the forecast looks clear)
  • Warm Hat and Gloves (early mornings or fall trips can be chilly)
  • Comfortable Socks (wool or moisture-wicking recommended)
  • Change of Clothes (in case of unexpected splashes or weather)
  • Dry Bag (optional—for phones, cameras, or valuables)

Safety Considerations for Anglers

1. Wildlife Encounters

  • Bears (Black & Brown/Grizzly): Common near rivers—especially during salmon runs. Guides carry bear deterrents, but clients must stay alert, follow instructions, and never approach wildlife.
  • Moose: Surprisingly aggressive, especially with calves. Maintain distance and avoid startling them.

2. Cold Water & Hypothermia

  • Even in summer, Alaska’s rivers are cold. Falling in can quickly lead to hypothermia. Clients must wear provided PFDs while in the raft and dress in appropriate layers.

3. Rapid Weather Changes

  • Conditions can shift from sunny to rainy or windy within minutes. Sudden temperature drops are common, so layering and rain gear are essential.

4. Remote Location Risks

  • Many floats occur in areas without cell service or quick access to emergency services. Guides are trained in first aid and carry emergency gear and communication devices.

5. Sun Exposure

  • Long daylight hours and reflective water can lead to sunburn or eye strain. Sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen are highly recommended.

6. Insects

  • Mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be intense, particularly in June and July. Insect repellent is a must.

7. Slippery Terrain & Wading Risks

  • Riverbanks and submerged rocks are slick. Wading should only be done with guidance, using appropriate boots or waders for traction and stability.
